Greetings,
Oops, I should have checked this before I pressed SEND, sorry! I meant
to update this newsletter with Winter Show news, as we have exciting news
for our show this year.
Ken Chatwin and Murray McAllister met with members of the Mountain
Pacific Racing Homer Society to work out arrangements for the racing homer
club to participate in our show this year. Everyone is in agreement that
having the racing club host their annual show with us would benefit both
clubs, as it would bring in additional exhibitors, birds and hopefully
visitors to our show, and provide a new venue for the racing club to host
their show. So, the Mountain Pacific Racing Homer Society scheduled to
host a one day show on Saturday, with an auction also scheduled for
Saturday evening. This also means that our club will no longer provide
classes for race birds. If any member wants to enter race birds, they will
have to contact the racing homer club for entry forms and show details.
You can read all the show details from the Winter Show News article
included in this newsletter.
The racing homer club is also to arrange for hosting a small concession
during Saturday, which will be available to all those attending our show.
We look forward to their participation in our show this year, encourage
all our members and exhibitors to support this new arrangement and check
out the racing homer show.
Thanks,
Keith

Pigeon air strike in Ireland
Last month the Irish Air Accident Investigation Unit issued its
report on an April 2003 incident in which a Ryanair 737 jet was
forced to make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport after one of
its engines was damaged by a flock of racing pigeons. The report
stated that on the day of the incident, 21,000 racing pigeons were
released in south-east Ireland to race back along the east coast,
and therefore close to Dublin Airport, to their lofts in Northern
Ireland.
Immediately following the incident the Irish Aviation Authority
met with the Irish Homing Union and the Northern Ireland Pigeon
Racing Association and it was agreed to ban the release of racing
pigeons on the East Coast. However it was made clear that if the
westward shift of race routes did not solve the problem then “more
formal, regulatory methods” would be introduced. Currently there is
no legislation in the U.K. governing racing pigeons, although the
rules of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association ban race starts within
eight miles of an airport.
Racing pigeons are particularly dangerous to aircraft because
they are heavy, they fly in compact flocks on low flight paths which
means they tend to hit planes at the most vulnerable phases of
flight: take off and landing, and the fact that their homing
instinct makes them virtually immune to normal bird scaring
techniques used at airports. World-wide there have been a number of
both civil and military plane losses attributable to racing pigeons,
most recently an executive jet which hit a flock near Italy’s Milan
airport and crashed killing all those aboard. |
