Now that it appears our summer is over, it is time to think about the upcoming
show season. There are a number of shows locally that you should consider
attending. When I say locally, I am also including Washington state, as the
shows are close enough that you can drive there in less than a day. Have a
look at the event calendar in this newsletter, to see which ones you would
like to attend. Remember, if you are showing in the US, you must vaccinate
your birds for PMV.
The Western Canadian National Show is always worth attending, and this year,
is being held in Lloydminster. I know of number of club members will be attending.
If you would like more information about the show, click on the link in the
events calendar.

Lawn Show 2007
by Dave Williamson
On Sunday, July 8, 2007 VP & FPA members, both old and new, their
families and friends got together to enjoy the club's annual lawn
show. All the time honoured traditions were observed, blue skies,
a delicious barbecue, refreshments in the cooler, a raffle table and
of course a pigeon show under canvas. A good crowd from the Lower
Mainland, Vancouver Island and Washington state gathered to watch
judge Mike Lopez go through the 102 birds from 11 exhibitors. Good
natured competition prevailed with Ken Chatwin and Ernie Silveri each
taking both young and old bird awards in the flying and fancy sections
respectively.
While we often comment about how the pigeon fancy is struggling to
survive it was good to see everyone enjoying this pleasant event.
Thanks goes to Ernie Silveri who again allowed us to use his residence
for our show, to Murray McAllister our BBQ chef and to Ken Chatwin
the show set-up co-ordinator. A complete listing of the best of breed
winners follows:
Pigeons have lived alongside man for thousands of years with the first
images of pigeons being found by archaeologists in Mesopotamia (modern
Iraq) and dating back to 3000 BC. It was the Sumerians in Mesopotamia
that first started to breed white doves from the wild pigeon that
we see in our towns and cities today and this undoubtedly accounts
for the amazing variety of colors that are found in the average flock
of urban pigeons. To ancient peoples a white pigeon would have seemed
miraculous and this explains why the bird was widely worshipped and
considered to be sacred. Throughout human history the pigeon has adopted
many roles ranging from symbols of gods and goddesses through to sacrificial
victims, messengers, pets, food and even war heroes!
