We
have a short bulletin this month, as everyone is busy preparing for our
show this weekend. There has been a change in the show setup schedule, as
we are not able to get access to the building on Thursday evening, as
originally planned. The setup is now set for 8:00 AM Friday morning. Hope
to see lots of volunteers for this setup, even though it may be a work day
for some of you.
Don't
forget about our exhbitors reception Friday evening, which is hosted again
this year by Compass Cladding. This starts at 7:00 PM and ends at 9:30 PM.
Lots of food and fun, see you then!
Regards,
Keith

Sun City Million Dollar Pigeon Race
This international event which is billed as "The Greatest
Pigeon Race In The World" will be held for the twelfth consecutive
year on February 2, 2008. A total of 4,902 pigeons have been entered
for this year's race, 1,261 from South Africa and 3,641 from 26
other countries, including 74 from Canada.
This one loft
race originates in Sun City, South Africa and features the richest
prize package in the sport. Last year's race paid a total of $US 1.6
million in cash and prizes.
When you consider not only the
logistical nightmare of organizing a race like this but also the
additional restrictions imposed by the recent global outbreaks of
Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, the success of the race shown
by the number of entries is a testament to the professional efforts
of the organizer Air Sport Internationale.
The pigeons
entered in the race go through a training program that begins with
basket training and short tosses and develops into weekly races
starting at 50 km and growing to 250 km by late January 2008. The
"Final Race" on Saturday, February 2, 2008 will be from 550
km.
Pigeon fanciers and entrants can follow the progress of
their birds through the race results posted on the race web site www.scmdpr.co.zaand through the weekly press releases and newsletters sent out
by various national organizing groups and syndicates. For those
fanciers more interested in attending the race, the Sun City Resort
offers a 10 day "Trip of a Lifetime" vacation package around the
race date. A winning bird at this race not only brings its owner
acclaim and major prize money but becomes a source of national pride
for its country of origin.

Flying the Coop

Their names could easily be mistaken for exotic imported
beers: The English Long Face Muff Tumbler. The Clean Legged Fullhead
Swallow. The Indian Fantasy. The Scandaroon. The Schmalkaldener
Mohrenkopf.
They're all striking, almost startling show birds, each breed
with its own charms and quirks -- a long curved neck, a lacy wing
pattern, an extravagant fantail -- and its own set of ardent
fans.
And they're all pigeons.
Yes, the much-maligned
pigeon -- "rats with wings," as Woody Allen once eloquently put it
-- has its own pageant circuit, and the Garden State Pigeon Fanciers
Association will stage its Young Bird show tomorrow in Ridgefield to
showcase some of the more popular pigeon breeds. Similar to a dog
show, the winners are those that come closest to the breed
standard.
Minutes of the meeting of the Vancouver Poultry &
Fancy Pigeon Association held Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the
residence of David Williamson.
President Ernie Silveri called the meeting to order at 2:20
pm. There were 7 members present. Motion to accept the minutes as
published moved by Bill Papas and seconded by Mickey Compton.
The Northwest Winter Pigeon Classic is to be held in the
Restaurant Building of the Puyallup Washington Fairgrounds on
November 23-25th.
The Entry Catalogs are out and available
from the Show Secretary, Gene Nollan - gekneede@aol.co m. Entries are $3
and email/pay at show entries are welcome. Set up and early cooping
on Friday, birds must be in place by 9 a.m. on Saturday.
There are lots of awards and this is the place for "Good
Friends, Good Birds and Good Fun". Actually we should add 'Good
Food' because we have the best lunch counter
anywhere.
